This blog is for everybody that has difficulty handling their mail. Does your mail pile up throughout the week or do you handle it right away? Do you have weeks worth of mail in a pile in your home? Do you have a designated area in your home to process your mail? Do you own a shredder?
For those of you who have difficulty dealing with your mail, and you know who you are, here is my system for handling mail. This may not be for everybody, but this is what works well for me. Everybody has their own system and what works for them. The key is to have a system.
1. Mail arrives.
2. I bring it into the office. There is also a shredder in my office.
3. I handle the mail right away. It takes less than 5 mintues to do this. If not, you will keep putting it off and that's how the mail starts to accumulate, bills get forgotten or lost, and this is how late fees incur.
4. I go through each piece, sorting as I go.
5. Junk mail. If it has your personal information on it, shred it.
6. Magazines. Put in a pile and bring to the area in your home where you read.
7. Store flyers. If you don't need it, THROW IT OUT!
8. Coupons. If you can't cut them out at that moment, have a file folder or area in a drawer where you keep your coupons and file them in there for now and cut them when you are ready to go to the market.
9. Bills. I have a desk calendar and I file the bills in the calendar in the week before they are due.
10. Bills that need to get paid asap or mail you need to tend to asap. File them with your to do list for the week.
11. Any other mail that is of importance, file it in the calendar right away or tend to it at that moment.
If you struggle with mail, take less than 5 minutes each day this week and process your mail. Tackle that pile of mail that has been sitting on your table and start fresh with a new system. You will feel energized and motivated! You are one more step to becoming organized!
I just got back from my weekly Weight Watchers meeting. Guess what the topic was? Shopping Smart. I know you have heard me talk about this numerous times. This meeting really validated that there are definitely people out there wasting time and money at the supermarket because they are disorganized in the kitchen.
Many of the women spoke at the meeting. Here are some things that were talked about at the meeting:
1. One woman has 6 bottles of maple syrup in her closet.
2. One woman has no idea what is in the very back of her closet.
3. One woman wings it at the supermarket with no list or plan.
4. Some go to the supermarket more than once a week.
5. One woman has things in the closet that do not even belong in the kitchen.
I just sat there thinking, does everybody realize how much time and money they are wasting, and probably making poor food choices due to not planning properly?

Do you have so much to do that you do not know where to begin? You will not be efficient if you are mentally distracted. A to-do list may seem time consuming, but trust me, in the long run you will save time. You will experience less stress knowing everything you have to do is on your list.
On Friday or Saturday, I usually take about 15 minutes and make a to-do list for the week ahead. My to-do lists are written on plain old recycled paper, nothing fancy. There are many tools out there you can use to write your lists. Some tools you can look into are Microsoft One Note, ipad notes, electronic calendars or if you want to have fun with your list go to www.knockknockstuff.com.
Here is how I go about writing my to-do lists:
First, I take out my calendar and start with the important appointments for the week and write them on the days on the to-do list. Then, I work in any errand that I need to run, i.e., bank, mail bills, phone calls, food shopping, etc., Next, I schedule in physical activity. I will also write down any housework, laundry, that needs to get done.
All the above is prioritzed into each day. Try to schedule your errands on days where you know you will be in the area of the errand instead of running all over town everyday and wasting time and gas. This is why it is good to write everything down so you have an idea of where you are going to be each day.
Try to stay on track with your to-do list. If you can't get to an item that day, no worries, just carry it over to the next day. The important thing is it's still on your list and it has not been forgotten.
Cross items off your to-do list as you finish them. You will feel a sense of accomplishment and this will keep you motivated.
Do what works for you. If you want to write a to-do list the night before instead of writing one out for the entire week, go for it!

Are you organized when it comes to your medications? Here are some valuable tips about storing and organizing your medications.
Believe it or not, your medications should not be stored in a medicine cabinet in the bathroom. The bathroom is the worst place to store your medicine. The bathroom is prone to high temperatures and humidity. Medications should be stored away from heat and moisture and closed tight. Keep in a hallway closet, or anywhere in the home where the room temp is between 68 and 77 degrees. Some meds need to be stored in cooler places. Always read the labels.
1. Go through your home and gather all your meds.
2. Check for expiration dates and throw out any expired medication.
3. Check your closet every year for expired meds.
4. Call your local pharmacy if you are unsure as to how to dispose of your meds.
5. Keep your meds in one place in the home and store them in a bin/container to your liking.
Please check on your elders and make sure that they are organized when it comes to their medications. Also, check to make sure they have a list of all the medication they are taking and be sure they carry the list with them at all times, most importantly, to doctor's appointments. Set them up with a pill organizer so they are taking their pills on schedule every day. Not only our elders, but everybody should carry a list of meds that they are taking. List the name of the medication, dosage, and how often you take the medication.
You are taking one more small step to getting organized.
It is that time of year; the weather is getting warmer, and we are starting to spend more time outdoors, whether it be yardwork, exercising, or children playing sports. Are you prepared if there is an accident, a bee sting, a scrape or fall? Do you have a first aid kit, and does everybody in your household know where it is located? Do you panic because you can find a bandaid, but can't find the antiseptic spray, or bee sting relief pad? Now is a great time to get organized and create a first aid kit and keep one in each bathroom or a designated spot in the house where everybody knows where to locate it if an accident were to happen.
You can store your first aid products in a see through or colorful container, a basket, or whatever type of container will fit in the space you are storing the kit.
If you are confused as to what type of first aid products to buy, I have provided a list of suggestions to include in your kit.
* Tweezer & magnifer for removing splinters
* Small scissors
* Disposable ice pack
* Alcohol wipes
* Insect sting relief wipes
* A box of all different sizes of bandaids
* Gauze pads- 4x4 pads or a gauze roll
* If anybody is allergic to bees, keep a spare epi-pen in the kit
* First aid guide
If all of your first aid items are not stored in one place, think about doing this and be sure everybody knows where it is located. Next time an accident occurs, you won't be scrambling looking for items, you will be organized and prepared.
